The SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area) is a zone in which consumers and businesses can send and receive payments under uniform conditions and with the same rights and obligations, regardless of location. SEPA payment instruments include credit transfers, direct debits and card payments.
A SEPA direct debit mandate is the legal basis for collecting payments via SEPA direct debit. It includes your consent to have the payee debit the amount from you the payer as well as the instruction for your bank to make the payment.
In order to use the SEPA direct debit scheme as a payee, a creditor identification number is required. This unique and account-independent identifier is valid throughout the EU and serves to additionally identify the payee as the direct debit originator.
The mandate reference is an identifier for a direct debit mandate that is individually assigned by the payee. It can contain up to 35 alphanumeric characters and, in combination with the creditor ID, enables one to provide the mandate underlying the collection of the direct debit with a unique ID.
So that the account debit can be reversed, a SEPA core direct debit can be revoked by the payer up to eight weeks after the debit. A direct debit collection without a mandate – i.e. an unauthorized direct debit – can be returned within 13 months of the debit.
